Senior Feature – Madaline S.
Capital High School
When Madaline was just three years old, her dad – a lifelong skier – introduced her to the slopes for the first time. It was not long before her need for speed emerged, prompting an early withdrawal from ski school group lessons. “I had to wait and slow down for the other kids, so my dad took me out and taught me to ski himself!” said Madaline.
Madaline joined BBSEF Mitey Mites at age 6 and continued to build on her strength and speed through the North Series and Alpine Competitive Team (ACT) programs. She racked up points in Slalom, GS, and Super G races throughout the Intermountain Division and went on to compete at Western Regional Championships in Alaska. Leaving no stone unturned, Madaline raced FIS last year.
“I have many favorite memories,” Madaline said, “but a big one was moving up from North Series to ACT and getting to a whole other level of ski racing. It became more competitive, and I loved the new level of coaching and new friendships I made.”
Madaline’s favorite activities off the slopes include ultimate frisbee, working out at the gym, and hanging with her friends. She also likes to crochet and bake.
Madaline will head to the University of Utah in the fall to pursue a major in the medical field. “Along with being on the club ski team,” she said.
When asked what she would tell her 6-year-old self about life on skis, Madeline offered this: “I would tell myself then and now to cherish every moment on skis because you never know how long it will last.”
Congratulations Madeline. Here’s to a lifetime of carving those speedy turns!
